Cuisenaire Rods: Math Manipulatives That Make Mountains Move!!
My students need individual sets of manipulatives where they are able to fully explore a new concept being taught. The Cuisenaire Rods have many great uses. They can be used for addition, subtraction and fractions.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Semien's classroom raised $429

My Students
I proudly teach at a Title I poverty campus in the heart of downtown Houston, where I truly believe I have the best students in the world. Because of the area in which I work, my students often go without. My daily mission is to make them feel special in every way possible!
Our mission, which we read every day, says the person I will focus on being better than, is the "me" of yesterday!!
I truly believe they strive to meet this challenge daily. Despite their living conditions, the lacks of their lives, they find the positive in all things.
I had the pleasure of looping up from 2nd to 3rd with my babies! Currently, I am teaching 3rd grade Math and Science, which is a brand new experience for me! My students are eager to learn the new curriculum and excited to meet and surpass any challenge I place before them!
My Project
Teaching fractions can be such a complex skill to students. However, Cuisenaire Rods make the process so much easier. Cuisenaire Rods are concrete pieces that students can use to give them a clear understanding of representing and comparing fractions. Hands-on experiences are amazing in helping my babies understand concepts better. Currently, we don't have enough manipulatives to allow all students to explore on their own.
My project will allow me to meet all my students on their level and allow them the time they need to explore without rushing to give manipulatives to other students.
When new skills are taught, each student will be able to grasp concepts, engage and explore with their individual hands-on manipulative.
Cuisenaire Rods can and will also be used to help students who are still struggling with addition and subtraction. Although Cuisenaire Rods are very small pieces, but when used in whole group, small group and workstations, they can close a big gap in misunderstanding!
