My Students
Fifth grade is an important grade because it is when they start to become individuals and really begin to think about who they want to become. They may not be ready to choose a career path, but are deciding if they are going to give it their all to do well in school, sports, and friendships. My students give it their all, all day, every day! Technology helps me motivate them!
Unfortunately, our school receives very little funding for resources like technology and technology-related supplies.
We do the best we can to share among classes, but the continuous use of technology, daily, will help them become more proficient and motivated. Help me, help them!
My Project
Being given the opportunity to curl up in a bean bag chair for 15 minutes and read about current events written with their abilities and interests in mind would be the highlight of many of my fifth grader's day. The majority of children I teach say they prefer to read non-fiction, however most classroom libraries are stocked with fiction and the informational texts available are often outdated. My students need a TIME For Kids subscription for access to current informational texts written to engage them with topics that interest them and images and graphics that draw them into the articles. The subscription comes with a digital component that offers videos and other components that will surely engage them before or after reading the texts. The digital edition will also read higher level texts to students with special needs. The Lenovo tablet and the 13 Acer chromebook with the larger screen will offer access to this digital subscription. Having access to the bean bag chairs gives them the opportunity to curl up and escape into a text or educational videos.
