My students need tablets and headphone to increase their literacy skills. Second graders are drawn to technology and benefit greatly from hearing/seeing text.

My Students
I joined this classroom midyear after they have had several changes in staff dynamics in the room. I have noticed that it is difficult to engage the students in meaningful text and reading experiences. I think having tablets that I can load with books will help them focus for longer periods of time.
This class is very engaging!
They want to be actively talking and doing all the time. They are great at being ready with thoughts to share. They love to be challenged to work hard and achieve goals. The students come from a low income area. Most of them receive breakfast and lunch at school. Few students have dedicated parents who help them with homework and are involved in seeing them succeed. Nearly all of the students in this class test low in reading and math. A major goal of our school is to bring those test scores up to a more acceptable number. I think giving these students the opportunity to interact with books on a tablet would help them enjoy interacting with literature. These students don't have a lot of technology in their home lives, but are able to use laptops and a smart board regularly in the classroom.
My Project
Students will use the tablets in independent reading time to hear a text read to them and then read the text aloud. I plan on downloading many books and instilling in the students a love of reading by exposing them to many authors and texts. Students will also use the headphones along with classroom laptops as they interact with the school website that assesses and builds math and reading skills. Students may also have the opportunity to work on interactive documents on the tablets which will aid them as they go on to higher grades where they are expected to be able to use many aspects of technology. These tablets would also help reinforce good behavior by being a first choice for scholars who are on task throughout the day.
Having tablets and additional headphones in our classroom will help many students be more exposed to literature and technology.
It's my passion to share the love of reading--not just in class read aloud times, but also in independent reading skills. Hopefully, having a tablet will be an incentive for students to want to read and stay engaged in texts independently. Handing a scholar a tablet that will read a text to them would be an excellent addition to the reading program in our classroom!
