My students need quality and culturally relevant novels and articles to be used in their reading class focusing on the books "Brown Girl Dreaming" and "Inside Out and Back Again." I am also requesting a class subscription to Scholastic News and laminating pouches.
I currently teach 4th grade scholars in the Miami, Florida area in a difficult neighborhood of extreme poverty. I have enjoyed my year so much that I want to continue on with my scholars next year to 5th grade. My students are bright, intuitive, and have the drive to succeed no matter their circumstances. My students attend one of the lowest-achieving schools with little access to resources and experiences.
My students face unimaginable obstacles inside and outside of the classroom.
A majority of my students are at least a grade level behind where they should be, but that doesn't affect their determination to succeed. My students have a growth mindset, and they continue to amaze me with their perseverance and persistence. They will succeed. They will achieve.
The sky is the limit at my elementary school!
My Project
In my reading class, it has been my goal to get students invested in reading through culturally relevant pedagogy. I want my students to identify world issues and discover new worlds through literature. I feel this can be done by having Scholastic weekly magazines for students. They will be able to read about current events, on their reading level, and develop necessary reading skills while doing so.
Novel studies are crucial in developing lifelong readers.
The novels "Brown Girl Dreaming" and "Inside Out and Back Again" will give my students not only reading a novel independently but it is also culturally relevant. Its important for students to be exposed to literature with characters that either look like them or have similar experiences.
These resources will help transform my reading class.
