This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a newly credentialed teacher, I’m beginning to set up my classroom for the very first time—and I want to make sure it’s a space where all students can feel supported, organized, and excited to learn. I’m requesting a 25-cubby storage unit so that each student has a personal place for their schoolwork and supplies, since our classroom does not have desks. I’m also requesting floor seats to create a cozy, comfortable, and flexible reading nook that invites students to engage with books in a way that feels welcoming and accessible. Many of my second grade students are reading below grade level. Our school is Title I, with many students who are English language learners and around 50% living below the poverty line. They will benefit from clearly structured, consistent environments. The cubbies will help them stay organized, build responsibility for their materials, and feel a sense of ownership; while the floor seating will support a literacy-rich classroom that meets students where they are. My goal is to create a space where every student can grow, feel valued, and find joy in the learning.
