During the 2016-2017 school year, a group of female students and teachers from our small public school will be participating in a unique experiential learning program. We'll learn about Cuba through the lens of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math), History, and Language. The program will culminate in field study in Cuba in spring 2017.
Our students have a wide array of academic interests that they would like to hone to create their own research projects in Cuba.
When they return from their time in Cuba, they'll present their work to students and educators across our city.
We have designed this experiential-learning program specifically for our female students. Our goal is to create meaningful experiences in and increase their exposure to STEAM fields in which women are severely underrepresented. We chose Cuba as our focus because of the unparalleled opportunities and unique perspectives it offers during this pivotal point in its history.
These ladies will take on the roles of researchers and students in order to be leaders and teachers for students across our city.
My Project
There are several areas in the field of international travel that improves student learning. First, there is untapped potential for students to develop meaningful projects that culminate in an international field experience. Second, international field study allows for interdisciplinary investigation. Third, blended instruction creates space for teacher guidance and students ownership and pacing.
This project promotes ownership and real world application, and in the process redefining student success.
This project will help cover a portion of the cost to travel to Cuba and go on this field study. Through projects in the context of a global field study, students are empowered. Through this field study, students will co-design the curriculum and their final project, taking ownership of their learning. Students will focus on inquiry and asking questions about the world around them to jumpstart their learning of the real world. We know from research and experience that allowing students to personalize their learning fosters an important feeling of agency in their education.
