I have 21 wonderful third graders in a Title 1 school. This means that they don't have all of the benefits of an unlimited PTA or wealthy parents. But they are hungry to learn and explore!
Science is a discipline that demands exploration and trial-and-error. It thrives on cooperation and discussion. This doesn't happen over a great worksheet! It happens when students have the materials they need to apply what they know, notice characteristics, and try new ideas.
My students have textbooks and charts to learn science, but they do not have microscopes, petri dishes, slides, or models. They need these items to go beyond what I "tell" them about science and "explore" science. A child that works through the scientific process to prove an idea will not only remember what he learned but be excited by it!
Your donation for these science materials will spark a desire in my eight year olds for more knowledge of the world around them. It is vitally important to capture our children's love of adventure and exploration . Their excitement now may feed their commitement to science careers later.
