My Students
My students are challenged with reading difficulties and struggle to stay engaged in reading because of that deficit. They are typically low income and are at risk. At the campus they are assigned, there is no library, so it is difficult to encourage reading without reading material.
The students are frequently at risk, and have been placed at different campuses in order to find a fit, where they can learn more disciplined behaviors and learning.
They are eager to read something that they can get excited about and always thrilled when I find a new book. I'm also excited about knowing there isn't a movie already out, and they can experience this book for the first time, without everyone already knowing how it ends. They really like the mystery and experiencing it for the first time.
My Project
The book, "The 39 Clues," and resources I have chosen involve a highly engaging story. Two kids have been listed in a will. They have the choice of receiving $1,000,000 or 39 clues to a huge family mystery. There is already a website hosted by the author where students engage in activities, writing competitions, research different countries and decode the mystery.
This project is an excellent resource for engaging my learners in a book that will foster participation, integrate technology, and naturally bring social studies components to the lesson.
