Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students from our school come from all over the world, representing languages, such as: Spanish, Khmer, Burmese, Nepali, Vietnamese, Lao, Indonesian, French, Swahili, Lingala, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, Pashto, and Malay. We are proud to say that this diversity is our strength.
My students are enthusiastic and dedicated learners, but are met with challenges such as learning a new language.
They deserve an environment that sees their bilingualism and multilingualism as an asset and builds on it. After all, they are the heart of our school community!
My Project
Unfortunately, our Science and Social Studies curriculums are outdated or essentially nonexistent. The Scholastic News and Science Spin magazines provide up to date and seasonal topics that will improve the curriculums.
These magazines will allow me to teach Science and Social Studies at a level that is meaningful and engaging for my first graders.
In addition to these content areas, the magazines and the online content provide students with a personal resource to practice reading fluency, identifying sight words and basic reading skills. Students can highlight focus words, complete the activity pages and follow along as the online content plays on our SMARTBoard.
Lastly, these magazines will also provide students with reading materials to take home and share with their families.
