Cross-Curricular Creativity

Help me give my students learn the art of gelli printing and mixed media design that combines visual art and literacy.

My Project

Printmaking is an excellent way to use interdisciplinary curriculum systems to explore literacy in an artistic fashion. Gelli printing would be a benefit to my art program because it would allow students to use mixed media techniques that can also be a cross curricular project. This medium makes it easy to combine visual arts with the digital arts that students are working on in business class or ELA by incorporating poetry or quotes into the prints. My goal with these materials is to provide more opportunities for all students, but particularly those with special needs to be able to create unique compositions that do not require drawing skills. Art has a unique ability to teach students different ways of communicating beyond words. By creating, they can express their emotions and develop their social emotional learning skills. Responding to and interpreting artwork allows students to learn to clearly and respectfully develop and share their opinions. I am fortunate as an art teacher to get to develop and provide a program in a small, rural school in Central Montana where many students do not have much access to the arts. Giving this opportunity to my students is so meaningful because I have many students that thrive in the arts and would not otherwise have the chance to learn these skills.
