My Project
Music education is of course necessary in its own right, but there is no doubt that music is also an eclectic subject that contains and relates to many others, from math and science to language and history. This understanding of music's inherent cross-curricular connections combined with my school district's push to increase student reading and writing has inspired me to begin building a classroom library for my general music students.
The books I have selected for this project represent diverse people and ideas, promote social & emotional learning, and celebrate history and culture, all through a musical lens.
Books also include Spanish and bi-lingual texts to support our several English-Language Learners. With these books, I will be able to have structured reading time once a week in addition to having a wonderfully enriching option for students who complete assignments early on days that we focus on projects or individual work.
My goals through this project are to promote reading comprehension and literacy skills among my 5th and 6th grade students, to provide them another avenue for learning more about how music and musicians shape our world, and to hopefully inspire a love of reading, or at least a strong appreciation for it, in as many students as possible.
