Cross Country Team - Med-Ball Mayhem!

My students need 5 8-pound medicine balls, 3 ten-pound medicine balls, and 3 six-pound medicine balls as a step to help them achieve their Cross Country team goal to be more competitive at the state level.

My Students

Our school is an inner city school in a high poverty, low socio-economic region where jobs are scarce and the entire student body receives free lunch. Without a booster club, the team holds an annual fundraiser to generate the funds for uniforms and travel.

The cross country team, consisting of twenty five students in grades 9-12, just completed its third season with another trip to the state finals.

Our goal is to become more competitive at the state level but our school does not have a gym, track, weight room, or other necessary exercise equipment. Hence, our team motto is “no excuses.” Some of the kids run because they are athletic and competitive, some because they want to better their health, some for college applications, and others run to be a part of something positive in our community. In only three seasons, the boys team has qualified for the state finals where we had the 5th and 19th place finishers this past season along with a freshman girl who finished 35th. The athletes are very motivated to improve upon their successes by focusing more upon core strength in the upcoming season.

My Project

An athlete’s physical strength depends on the strength of their individual core (abdomen), leg strength, and flexibility. Many top tier running programs spend part of their daily training routine completing exercises with medicine balls. Considering we do not have a weight room or gymnasium, medicine balls would be a great way for athletes to build strength without having to raise funds for a local gym membership. A typical practice begins with yoga and a dynamic stretching routine followed by a 1-2 mile warm up run. After the warm-up, we perform threshold training two days a week, and run for distance 2-3 days each week. Following our workout, we like to run some 40-50 meter striders and then finish the practice with more static stretching. A sample of some exercises I would like to incorporate into our practice routine some medicine-ball-exercises so I am requested a variety of different weight medicine balls.

Incorporating the medicine ball into our daily practices will provide the extra training my students need to perform at a higher level and hopefully win state championships.

By focusing on performing the exercises correctly, the members will learn more discipline and attention to detail. For the members of the team that are less competitive, it will teach them another way to be more physically active and live a healthier lifestyle. Moreover, it will be another way for the team to bond together.
