Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project is to fund yarn supplies for my crochet classroom at my Title I Manhattan school. Crocheting is a hands-on skill that helps students relax and de-stress from their more-than-usual stressful lives. In my class, students have taken the initiative to teach themselves this skill by practicing at home and during their other classes when they are able to through videos online. They've shown an eagerness to accept the challenge of learning new patterns and finishing new projects!
Most of my students have decreased their in -class phone use through crocheting because the activity allows them to keep their hands busy and their ears free to listen in class.
Some things that they have crocheted include: hats, scarves, pencil cases, phone cases, mug cozies, stuffed animals, single and bouquets of flowers, cardigans, crop tops, leg warmers, crossbody purses, and more!
Your donation would help sustain the most popular elective currently at my school. Even students who cannot fit in the elective have taken the initiative to either learn the skill on their own or to get support from a student who is in the class, which built a strong community of crocheters at the school. It has surprised me to see how excited students are about crocheting, and I would love the chance to sustain their work in creating more new projects!
