Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My 7th grade history students are an incredibly bright, resilient, and curious group of learners. They attend a Title 1 school that serves primarily Black and Latino students, many of whom come from under-resourced communities. Despite the challenges they face outside the classroom, they show up eager to learn, ask thoughtful questions, and engage deeply with the world around them. These students deserve every opportunity to succeed—and that starts with having the basic supplies they need to fully participate in their education.

These items may seem simple, but they are critical tools for success—notebooks, pencils, a pencil sharpener, and folders— and will support my students’ learning in history class:.

Each student needs a dedicated notebook to take notes, reflect on primary sources, and respond to historical questions. Having their own notebook allows them to organize their thoughts and track their progress throughout the year.

Pencils are a daily necessity that many of my students cannot consistently bring from home. A classroom stash ensures that no student ever has to feel embarrassed or left out for not having one. A reliable electric pencil sharpener helps keep things running smoothly and prevents downtime during lessons. And folders will help students keep their handouts, writing assignments, and reading materials organized—especially important as they learn to manage their time and materials more independently in middle school.

The goal of this project is to ensure that all of my students are equipped with the basic materials they need to engage meaningfully with our curriculum. When students don’t have to worry about where their next pencil is coming from, they can focus on higher-order thinking—like analyzing historical events, drawing connections to current issues, and developing their own informed opinions.
