In this amazing and expanding technology era, the standardized tests and college admission/entrance exams are now permit or even require the use of a graphing calculators. A TI-84 graphing calculator is a necessity for middle school and high school students to use in math and science classes.
My classroom is not a typical classroom you would see.
It is full of positive energy from my visual Deaf learners. They always ask "why do we learn math"? It is my goal to have them love and understand math outside of classroom!
My middle/high school students attend a small charter school established by a group of parents of Deaf children and Deaf community. Our school is a bilingual (American Sign Language and English) school striving to provide Deaf children the same opportunities and access to quality education that hearing students have. They are always ready to open their minds for everything the world have to offer. I often receive a general applaud for the role we, teachers of Deaf, play in changing a student's life, but I dare to say that my students are changing my life. They inspire me to be better and work harder every day. My students are the reason that I love my job and can't wait to go to work every morning.
My Project
To keep up the rapid growth in technology, we need to keep up along with the content areas in education field. I want to take advantage of tools to use TI technology tools to build student understanding in mathematics with real-life applications with calculators. A graphing calculator is a learning tool designed to help my visual students visualize and better understand concepts in mathematics and science. It will allow my students to make real-world connections in math and science classes. As they gain a deeper understanding of the material, students acquire the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they need to attain greater academic success. It will also expand their use of technology which is critical in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) field.
With the TI-84 plus, my students can view an equation, its graph, and the coordinates all at the one time.
Jump from point to point by entering a number. They are excellent features for our visual Deaf learners to grasp the concept in advance mathematics. Most of our students will not be able to afford the calculators, but if I get to provide for my students by donors like you will make a great difference in my classroom's learning. This project will push my students into higher level.
