Critical Thinking With Patterns and Relationships

My Project

Over the course of my career I have noticed a decline in my students ability to problem solve and critically think. I think far too often students are engaged with technology and in the process are disengaging with each other. They have become too accustomed to technology providing them with an immediate answer. They are focused more on getting the answer right than actually learning the mathematical connections that lead them to the answer.

Pattern games play a crucial role in fostering the development of mathematical thinking and connections in individuals.

Engaging in pattern-based activities enhances a students ability to use logical reasoning, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Patterns also serve as a bridge between concrete and abstract mathematical concepts. Pattern games such as Quirkle and Uzzle encourage the exploration of mathematical structures and help students form connections with different mathematical concepts. As individuals decipher and create patterns, they develop a strong foundation for more advanced mathematical concepts.

In my math classroom, the pattern games of Quirkle and Uzzle will be integrated to enrich the learning experience for students. They will play together and in doing so will recognize, discuss, explore and complete mathematical patterns. The games will be aligned with the curriculum and will be used to introduce new concepts and cement prior concepts into long term memory. My goal is to make math more enjoyable for students while simultaneously laying a solid mathematical foundation.
