My Students
The exciting thing about teaching 7th graders is they are starting to become cognizant of their place in the world and the role that they can play in shaping the world around them. Though our students often come from challenging circumstance, they see nothing but opportunity and they are excited to rise to the challenge!
In our classroom we say that we work on our critical thinking because these are critical times.
Our students live in Jacksonville neighborhoods where the intensity of these critical times is omnipresent and we are working to build a classroom community that is a safe place which allows them to use our Civics curriculum as an agent of change in their community.
Our students are the training to be the change that they wish to see in the world, and your help can make a huge difference!
My Project
These books will help me tackle two of the biggest problems that I face in class each year:
1.
My students are reluctant readers, and they are often reticent to tackle the texts that can bring the content to life.
2. They often see history and civics as a purely white story.
The graphic novels I am requesting deliver the content in a highly engaging way that all levels of readers can access. By telling the important stories of the Civil Rights Movement, our students will see that history has been, and can be, made by people that look just like them, and who were not much older than them when they did!
More than half of students from low‑income households
