My Students

My students are energetic, passionate, and creative thinkers that reside in our small California town. As middle schoolers, they have such a unique view on the world that comes from such an integral time in their lives. As they come together, we explore mathematics in ways that not only tie them into real world applications, but also make them more complex thinkers and problem solvers.

They come into class with the mindset that math is not just looking at generic formulas, but instead importantly using critical thinking to reach solutions.

Our class would be called "Problem Solving" if it was up to us, since we are focused on reaching solutions for problems, not just randomly solving math problems from a book. We do this by solving daily problems together, dissecting questions, and working on real-life problems including topics from Water-Park designs to TV installation in your home! Math is more than problems and tests, and my students love to show that through their work.

My Project

Our interactive math notebooks (MNBs) are the lifeline of our math class. They hold all of the projects and activities that we complete throughout the year, from August to June, and allow our class to reference things from our past to help us prepare and learn in the future. Due to limited budget, I am often forced to make a decision to buy smaller cheap notebooks with the limited budget I have or spend money out of my own pocket to opt up for larger and more heavy duty notebooks. Though the small notebooks get the job done, I have to either hand-cut every paper handed out (so it fits in the notebook) or spend precious class time to allow the students to cut out the papers themselves.

These larger and more durable math notebooks not only cut the prep time needed to maintain them and offer a pouch for students to store loose papers, but also are more likely to remain intact throughout the year.

The number of "notebook surgeries" (aka re-taping, gluing, finding lost papers, etc.) would lesson throughout the year, thereby allowing students to focus less on the materials behind their work, and more on the work itself. Not only that, but it gives ALL students a quality notebook that they can be proud of, since all of my students will have high quality notebooks to showcase their high quality work. This will increase our class time for problem solving and thus make for more time to learn!
