Criss-Cross, Where's My Spot?

My students need a rectangular carpet with defined space for each student for our large group instruction time.

My Students

"She's touching me!" "Teacher, he is seating in my spot again!" "I don't have enough room." These are common complaints that my students voice throughout our school year due to having an oval rug without defined seating space. Our current oval rug makes sitting in organized rows difficult.

My kindergarten students are 5 and 6 years old with a craving to learn.

Most come from lower income families and have diverse backgrounds. Some students are learning English for the first time. Most do not have the opportunity to attend preschool before starting kindergarten and need as much structure as possible to be successful in the classroom.

My Project

Replacing our current oval carpet with a rectangular one with color coded rows will define a sitting area for each student. The carpet is more than a place to sit. It is a classroom management tool. During large group instruction, I can pair students by the colored rows to build teamwork and partnerships during reading, math and more. It will define each student's personal space to help students feel comfortable while learning.

This carpet will eliminate the complaints that occur when students cannot easily define their personal space.

Their focus will be on learning and teamwork. Your support of this project will make a child feel secure while learning new skills in reading, math and more.
