"Criss, cross, applesauce!" That is how my kindergarten students know to sit on their bottoms and get ready for Carpet Time. However, without boundaries on the carpet, they are often moving around into each other's spaces.
I have a class of 21 energetic kindergarten students who attend a K-3 program in Indiana.
Most of my students are in the low socio-economic group. This group faces many challenges, including broken homes, drug use and neglect. There is a wide range of abilities, but all come together during Carpet Time.
My Project
During Carpet Time, students are engaged with music and movement. We review a variety of skills from updating the calendar daily to number sense activities. We also use this area to listen to stories, sing alphabet songs, and write our own stories. Individual carpet squares would allow me to custom build a seating area in front of my chalkboard and SmartBoard. Right now I have carpet, but the squares would allow each student to have his/her own space. This is so important to provide boundaries, especially with all the sing and dancing that goes on!
Providing the individual carpet squares would benefit our room by allowing each student to have his/her own space.
I can customize this area by arranging the squares to fit this unique space in front of the board, without interfering with the table arrangement. Carpet Time is a very important part of our Kindergarten day and by funding this project, it will work much more efficiently. I will be able to use this donation for many years to come as well.
