Criss-Cross Applesauce: Circle Time Space

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class consists of twenty-one energetic, curious kindergarten students who are always on the move. My kids are bright, funny and excited about school.

My students are eager to learn, but face financial and cultural challenges.

Over half of them are learning English as a second language. They come from families who often struggle just to provide the bare essentials of food and housing. Books, educational toys and preschool experiences are luxuries that my students cannot afford.

These happy children never let challenges get them down. They keep an upbeat, can-do attitude despite these trials.

My Project

Kindergarten students spend a good deal of time sitting "criss-cross applesauce" during group lessons, and class discussions. My students need a clean, comfortable seating area. The colorful pictures will help my students define their personal space and the the labels under the pictures will help students recognize printed words. Because the majority of my students are native Spanish speakers, I have chosen a bilingual rug to encourage the children to explore Spanish and English words. My current rug is 15 years old and it's worn out edges create a tripping hazard. I want my students to be comfortable and safe.
