I educate a community of diverse learners in Coney Island, NY. Several years ago many families at my school were adversely impacted by Super Storm Sandy; although the community has been rebuilding, it still has a long way to go. I teach two classes at I.S. 303 and work with many other students through my involvement with the student government.
My 6th grade is a general education class and my 7th grade is an ICT class with 12 students with an IEP and one student that just immigrated from El Salvador and does not speak any English.
Many students in both of my classes struggle with mathematical concepts and applying them to solve real world problems. Living in a low income urban environment hinders their ability to experience activities that children their age in other cities have experienced. My Project
As a teacher in a Title I school my students face many challenges. I work hard every day to provide them with the best education possible by making my lessons engaging and interactive. Having a Cricut Maker and materials would allow me to create manipulatives to help my students understand abstract concepts. I would also allow students to utilize the machine to explore concepts such as ratio, rate, symmetry and area.
In addition to a classroom teacher, I am also a member of the Lighthouse Team and co-facilitate our student government.
This year is our first as a Leader In Me school and we are currently in the process of revamping our school environment. A Cricut Maker could help us really make our school look special!
