Cricket Chorus!

My students need live specimens of insects such as crickets and a suitable longterm habitat for them. They will experience food chain interactions as they care for herbivores and witness our omnivore class pets in action!

My Students

I have been so fortunate to teach curious passionate children for 14 years as a Science Cluster Teacher for grades K - 5. When I was hired I was shown a stairwell where my "teaching materials" were kept and was told I would travel from room to room every period on three different floors (with no elevator)! I taught over 500 students every week for ten years and with perseverance, lots of organization and a bit of creativity I tried my best to deliver Science curriculum and content. Now we have been blessed with a new building that houses our PreK - 8th grade students and have a beautiful Science Lab where I hope to not only deliver content but experiences as well!

It truly touches me to be a role model and inspiration for these children year after year watching them grow and become young adults and even when they move onto our middle school come back to visit me, help out in my class, take in the new thematic decor, feed our pets or the best is when they just want to be a part of my lessons and activities and see whats happening in the room!

My Project

Students' ideas about the characteristics of organisms develop from their basic concepts of living and nonliving things. I have effectively integrated animals into the science curriculum to achieve many of our students’ learning goals. This project will ensure students have the supply of crickets (herbivores) to sustain the ecological habitats we have created in our classroom. The cricket keeper will also allow for life cycle observations. In learning how organisms like our bearded dragon, anoles, frog, turtle, fish and chicks have been successful in their habitats, students should observe and record information about animals.

I have developed activities that promote observation and comparison skills that instill in students an appreciation for the value of life and the importance of caring for animals responsibly.

Having live animals in the science classroom sparks students' interest in the living world around them and provides a memorable experience.
