Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a very diverse classroom of students who are just on the brink of being self-motivated to learn and love reading. I want this year to be the year when they dive deep into books and learn the mysteries hidden inside. Like good detectives, they will find them and gain even more than just the story.
My school is a true neighborhood school, where our families are very diverse, but economically struggling.
Our school is striving to be a leader in academics and learning in our network. We truly are a family community who all work together for the benefit of our students.
My Project
In our 4th grade classroom, we are responsible for teaching Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies and Character Building. These books would be extremely valuable in helping me teach essential reading, writing, thinking and interacting skills with the students as we read, discuss and think about all of the intricacies within the text. Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate is a wonderful story that the students can connect to because of the realistic storyline about a family falling on hard times, unable to make ends meet financially and the main character relying on his imaginary friend to cope. I'm sure this would be a great tool to show students how they can connect to text and discover new ways of reading. Each student having their own copy of the book is also vital so they can read at their pace, and reread excerpts as needed.
This book would be the turning point for my students from being passive readers, to true thinking readers who can really find the messages that the author is trying to convey in the story.
They will also be able to connect to the characters struggling to make ends meet which will help them learn more from the story because of those connections they can make to their own lives.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
