My Students

Bankruptcy - If trends continue, too many of my math students will find themselves just out of high school and already headed towards bankruptcy. I want to use the game of Monopoly to teach students about credit card debt, interest payments, late fees, and rent as I promote financial literacy.

My students are great kids with dreams of financial success that far exceeds their current situations.

The targeted group of students mainly come from a low-income neighborhood that contains many apartment complexes inhabited by single-parent families. Unfortunately, my student's parents have made many financial blunders and are setting a poor example with regards to financial decision. My kids need help with basic financial literacy topics such as credit cards, interest payments, late fees, insurance, rent, and many others. Your gift will allow me to use the beloved game of Monopoly to teach these kids all of this information along with building a strong mathematical foundation.

My Project

Your donation of 15 calculators will allow my students to play the game of Monopoly while incorporating credit cards, debt, interest, etc. to the game. Using a specialized personally-made game sheet, students will keep track of their finances. Because reality is that we start life with no money, students begin at zero and deduct each expense. When they pass "Go," they still get paid $200; however, if a student is in debt they have to pay a late fee and an interest payment on the debt they have accrued. Each time around the board accrues more fees, interest payments and eventual bankruptcy. Your gift of calculators allows the students to quickly find their specific payment (Eg. 22.99% of a balance of $318). Students can then deduct each expense, round to the nearest penny, and continue their game. Students will also add rent payments gained, beauty contests won, and pay home owner's insurance on their properties along with all of the other ups and downs of the game of Monopoly.

Without your gift of calculators, the students would spend so much time calculating interest and payments, they would not be able to play the game for a long enough time.

Students need a multitude of experiences adding up debt and payments to help them learn about credit cards. If told you have to pay one $29 late fee, you may not worry about this small expense; but as each player moves around the board, these expenses grow exponentially. Your gift would be such a help to these students!
