Remember having to make a poster or a display project and fretting about creating a title or finding images to make your creation pop? My students are in the same boat -- except most of them don't have the resources at home or at school to create what they consider to be a worthy project.
I teach at a Title I school in Haines City, FL in which most students don't get to use their creativity on a normal basis.
In my 14 years of teaching, I've found that students produce some of their best work them they are allowed to be creative and really show what they know. The irony is that they lack the supplies to create their best work. This is what I would like to change
My Project
For this proposal, I am requesting a Cricut, which is an electric die-cut machine. The machine connects to a computer to cut out virtually any shape you can think of or create. I can't even imagine all that my students would be able to do with this machine in my classroom. From poster displays to manipulatives used in our STEM unit, the possibilities with the Cricut are limitless. With the Cricut, students will really be able to dig into what we're studying and create relevant pieces of art work. With the help of the Cricut, they will have more access to shapes and pieces, helping their engineering skills as they build their projects. Projects like this not only reinforce the skills students are learning in math and science, but also helps make literature more tangible for students through differentiation.
Infusing art and STEM concepts into the curriculum is so important for my students.
When they are given the opportunity to showcase their learning through creative means, the end result is always outstanding. By providing my classroom with a Cricut, students will be able to use their creative talents to make meaning.
