My students need various art supplies like paint, paper, craft noodles, messy mats and blank softcover books to complete art projects throughout the year.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kindergarten is often the first experience in school for my students. They are precocious, curious and creative. Many of them have already been labeled "at-risk" because of the obstacles they have faced in their past. Our school is located in an area of low economic development, and my students just don't have the same access to resources that many other students do. Many of my students have never even held a paintbrush before!
Creativity is the basis of learning.
Students come to school with an innate creativity, but they need to be taught how to apply that skill. A majority of our students are coming from homes where English is a second language for them. Art can be a great way for them to express themselves without having to rely on words they are not confident with.
My Project
All the work we do in our class is authentic. It is made by the students and reflective of their vision. Unfortunately, this means we go through a lot of art supplies. We need various kinds of paper to make projects that support the skills we are learning about. For example, the students will make themselves into a turkey for Thanksgiving, we will make cards for our support staff and we paint almost every week as we learn about the contributions of famous artists.
I truly believe in giving students opportunities to be creative.
I think if we teach them how to express themselves in different ways, students will shine regardless of academic level. Doing this also makes learning fun!
It's important to me that my students have a passion for coming to school, and you could help me foster that excitement. When I tell them we are going to paint, my students get so excited. Who knows? Maybe you will help inspire a future Frida Kahlo or Vincent Van Gogh.
