Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third year 4th grade teacher in a low income neighborhood in the Bronx. My entire class of 18 students receives free breakfast and lunch.
Since most of the curriculum is geared towards the English and math state tests, my students have very few school resources to use for art. Every available opportunity I have, I incorporate art. My students love the creative outlet and thrive on artistic self-expression. I have many lower level students that have little self-esteem academically. When they do art, they feel proud that they excel in something. It is a very positive confidence builder.
I would like to get colored scratch paper, poster markers and pastels for the students to use in social studies. We would use the supplies to make pictures accompanying our slavery and civil war writing. Right now we have markers and crayons. These supplies would really enhance their work and would be exciting for them as well.
