This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Although I teach math, one of my biggest passions as a classroom teacher is helping students to love reading. I genuinely believe that every student can learn to love reading once they find the best book for their tastes and interests. I have spent the last several months fundraising to increase the diversity of books in my classroom library across all genres and identities. I am proud to now share a library with my students where they can see themselves represented in horror, fantasy, science fiction, romance, realistic fiction, graphic novels, biographies, picture books, and more!

I have noticed that a number of my students who are reluctant to engage with reading have a strong interest in Japanese anime and manga.

To me, manga is not only related to my Japanese culture, but also the perfect gateway to reading graphic novels, series, and superhero novels. I currently have a few sets of mangas in my classroom library, but they are constantly checked out and kids are begging for more! With your help, I would love to expand this corner of my library into a fully-fledged section of books. There are many different kinds of manga, but I have requested books from the 4 series that are most popular with students, in addition to books that celebrate Black history. It is my hope that these series will hook students into the reading experience and leave them hungry for more books!
