My Students

I have thirty-seven first graders that visit my classroom daily. I co-teach with my partner. I teacher math, science and social studies, and she teaches reading and language arts.

I am a first grader teacher in a rural public school district in Oklahoma.

My students love school and love using art to show their understanding of newly learned math and science skills. By adding art to the core curricular areas, it motivates my students and keeps them focused and interested on the skills we are learning.

My Project

My students will be using the materials for two separate projects. The first project will go along with our science unit, things that grow. After studying the process of how a plant grows and what it needs to grow, my students will design their own flower pot and plant a flower. We will monitor the process first hand and document the changes as the plant develops from a seed to flower. The second project will assist in their practice of counting groups of ten and understanding place value. We will use the shoe laces and beads to show their knowledge of how to count groups of ten and how place value is shown. Each student will design their own strand of beads according to the number they receive. Their strand of beads will show the ones, tens and hundreds!

By integrating the arts into our core subjects, I am able to motivate and inspire my first graders to learn by doing.

By involving my students in the learning process, they are able to better understand and apply the concepts being taught.
