Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is located in an area of low economic development. Over 90% of our students are growing up in poverty. Books and resources are scarce in their homes. But they come to school every day eager to learn and to apply their new skills.
My students love to learn and are full of questions about the world.
We read stories every day and one of my goals for them is to foster a passion for reading and for books. They love getting to know new characters and for many of them, it is their favorite part of the day. My students are the kindest, most curious, and fun class ever!
My Project
In all the craziness of this school year, one thing that really suffered was the number of art projects we could do with our students. Because there were so many regulations on who could touch what supplies added to the fact that everyone was so worried about learning loss-the focus was much more on academic subjects.
Art is an integral part of learning to be creative!
We ask our students to be creative in their work, but then fail to teach them how to do that. I love giving my students multiple ways to practice their creativity and to apply what they are learning. They can invent a new model in science or design a set for our reader's theater. We learn about new ideas and students can paint, draw or find other ways to express their creativity.
Our school district is facing major budget cuts this year. It would be amazing if we were still able to bring construction paper, paint supplies, chalk, and clay for these experiences in art to our students.
