Creativity Captured in Brilliant Color

My students need a color printer so their art and writing can be published in the brilliant colors they create it in.

My Students

Remember the excitement you felt when you published a piece of writing or finished a work of art in elementary school, and couldn't wait to take it home to share? Nowadays my students create their beautiful works of art on computers, and wish to take them home to share in all their vibrant colors.

My students attend a public school in a high poverty area.

Over 80% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our truly diverse student body is comprised of students from all over the world. Many of my students do not have a computer in the home and their only chance to explore digital technology and hone these important skills is at school in the lab. The skills they learn and practice in the lab are vital to their success as a life-long learner and student in a 21st century classroom.

My Project

In my technology class, I teach all students who attend our school. In Kindergarten, 1st grade and primary self-contained classes for students with Autism, we work with creating art and stories in programs such as Kerpoof and Paint. In 2nd - 5th grades and the intermediate self-contained class not only do they create art and visually stunning presentations in PowerPoint and Word, they learn how to publish and illustrate their writing on the computer. Students ask me on a daily basis if they can print out their work and take it home to share. My students need a color printer. Currently, the only option my students have if they wish to print out their published work is to print their creations in black and white, which greatly reduces their enthusiasm and the quality of their work. I see a marked difference in students' enthusiasm with the few pieces I have been able to print out in color -their faces light up and they cannot wait to take it home to read or share with their caretaker.

Having a laser printer that can print out high volumes quickly in color is so important for our busy computer lab and students.

It connects what the student is creating on the computer in a more solid way to the student, making what they learn in their Technology class real. Holding their drawing in their hand, rather than just being an abstract creation of pixels and words they can look at only the computer, is so much more real to a 5 or 6 year old. Printing brings their work to life.
