Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a very socio-economically disadvantaged area of Houston and the pandemic has not made things easier. Our district has provided both face-to-face and remote learning opportunities for our students.

Those students who come to school must follow strict social distancing guidelines and have lost the ability to be the energetic teenagers they are.

Due to the pandemic, we must limit student movement around the classroom to maintain contact tracing.

My students are some of the happiest and most determined children I have ever met. As a history teacher, my alternative seating options are limited but my students never complain about the uncomfortable chairs they must endure for 90 minutes each time they come to class.

My Project

My students must keep up with the latest advancements in education to spark an interest in reading through social studies. Education is changing every single day, and so are the ways my students learn and collaborate with each other. Students in my classroom like to learn, but in an environment that supports this. My classroom is in the process of becoming a 21st Century place of learning, so I would like to have bean bag chairs where they can debate, collaborate and learn in an environment that can hold their interests and keep them engaged in my classroom.

Learning in an environment that is conducive for this can create opportunities to grow, succeed, and understand how in our 21st Century world, learning is not at a desk, but in many different environments and places.

Students who learn in this manner are more likely to feel more comfortable being vulnerable to both learning and understanding what they are learning! Helping students begin to learn that it's not sitting at a desk, or at a table, or in rows is what learning is about. It is about being open, comfortable, and able to relax and take in what you are learning to truly become successful history students! My students will love sitting in a setting where they can be comfortable learning about history and that it is not a boring subject, but something that still affects us today.
