Creativity and Critical Thinking Through Interactive Notebooks

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When I look at my students, I see the future, and it is a bright one.
My kids are intelligent, highly motivated, kind, and eager to learn.
They love learning about the universe in science class, solving problems to become “detectives” in math, learning about our country's history in social studies, and discovering new ideas in the ​reading. My students are some of the brightest, most wonderful children I’ve ever met, and they deserve every opportunity they can get to learn and grow.
My Project
I want my students to have the opportunity to better understand science, math, and language. With my third graders, I would like to use interactive notebooks this school year, which give students a hands-on method of understanding difficult concepts.
Interactive notebooks teach students to organize and synthesize their thoughts, and they work for all types of learners.
They also give students important study tools to use both inside and outside the classroom. The notebooks allow parents to see what students are doing in the classroom, and can be important tools to help students remember what they’ve learned in the past.
Most importantly, though, interactive notebooks help students take ownership of their learning with a dash of creativity According to Minds-In-Bloom, “when students know, and are allowed, to use color in their notebooks, it makes their notes come alive. Using colored paper, markers, colored pencils, etc. makes it easier to sort information and group things together.”
Overall, this sort of project will help students grow more over the course of the school year and to take ownership of their own learning. It gives them much-needed agency in their education​ and gives them important tools to reinforce what we do in the classroom.
