Creativity and Critical Thinking Through Ceramic Art
Help me give my students a slab-roller in the ceramic classroom to successfully construct and design functional and sculptural ceramic art.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. B.'s classroom raised $752

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach ceramic art to a diverse group of students at a Title I school in the Bronx. Students in 6, 7, and 8th grade, from a wide range of cultures, are given an opportunity to experience the process of ceramic art.
My students enter the ceramic classroom eager to manipulate clay, as they explore the principles and elements of art to create their own ceramic artwork.
Through clay, students investigate personal ideas and creativity while problem-solving and celebrating success.
My Project
Our school offers a wonderful opportunity for students to create artwork with fire clay. Currently, our classroom has the basic equipment of a kiln, earthenware clay, glaze, and simple ceramic tools. Within a forty-five-minute period, students receive instruction and work with clay exploring their creativity while constructing artwork. The addition of a slab roller to our classroom would enable students to form larger slabs of clay than they are physically capable with a rolling pin.
A slab-roller in our ceramic room would enable students to create more complex artwork and reach the diverse needs of students.
Students can explore their creativity with evenly rolled slabs of clay to produce dynamic tiles, design original slab cups, and functional artwork using slump/hump molds, as well as constructing an original sculpture.
