Creativity and Critical Thinking Through Sewing!

My students need to learn to sew because they will feel a sense of accomplishment that comes from creating something handmade.

My Students

Our class is a diverse, high numbers of military children, and a high number of free and reduced lunches. These students love to create, and have high energy.

Imagine the sense of accomplishment when a student can create and use any handmade items.

This is a skill they will be able to use as adults on a limited budget.

After working with these students in the past with the Build and Grow activities, and hearing the words, "I made this," it gave me the idea that they needed to have other experiences, that may not always be provided. Our school serves students in grades Pre-K through 5th grade and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers, and a safe learning environment.

My Project

Sewing seems to be a lost art, and through this activity, students will learn to create, recycle, and accomplish something they have handmade. Some of the greatest things in life are from what we have made.

Students will be able to learn on a sewing machine, have time to interact with other adults, and walk away with accomplishing a new skill.

This is an opportunity for some that they may never have. We have parents and teachers that are willing to work with the students. With our school budgets being cut, the loss of Art and Music, there seems to be more of a need for extra-curricular activities to create. This will give students an opportunity to learn and be creative. The donations for this project will benefit the students, letting them have fun while they are learning.
