My Project
My students are sweet, spunky, and excited to learn! They are first graders at a Title I urban charter academy where 100% of students receive free breakfast and free lunch. Though their school career has gotten off to an unconventional start due to COVID-19, they have a contagious energy and passion for learning!
As we develop plans for keeping safe this year, we are cognizant of the fact that scholars may need to have individual sets of materials, and that we will need to more frequently clean and sanitize our common spaces.
As we navigate COVID-19, we are getting creative with the many ways we deliver instruction, and how students use our instructional space. One of the ways we are helping to keep as socially distanced as possible is with small-group instruction. I will meet with a group of 8 or fewer students at a time, while other scholars are working on independent practice, enrichment activities, or receiving additional help.
At this independent station, scholars work on activities that enrich or practice skills taught in class, and that can be done on their own. For example, they may be playing a game where they are counting money to 'buy' items on cards, or drawing charts to compare which items cost more than others.
In order to be successful at this station, scholars will need their own coloring supplies. With this project, I would like to ensure that every scholar has their own box of crayons and their own colored pencils to complete math activities such as those described above while at their independent station.
