This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are middle schoolers at a Title One school in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many from tough homes.

My students are active and enthusiastic even though they carry a lot of stress from home, which sometimes interferes with their ability to focus on doing their best work.

My students are motivated and eager to do well. They want to learn and they are constantly seeking opportunities to take ownership of their learning.

My Project

This project was inspired by “First Lego League”. The First Lego League project resonates with the work that I wish to continue with my students. At the beginning of the year, my students had the chance to code a fitness app in preparation for the New York City marathon. Since then, my students have been eager to continue to seek out more coding opportunities, whether thru Microbits, Kano, or EV3 Lego Mindstorms.

These materials, will further my students’ knowledge and desire to continue creating and coding.

By bringing in more coding materials such as the EV3 Lego Mindstorm, Dash and Dot and coding books, my students will continue to expand their knowledge with coding, along with the team building aspect that comes from working together and problem solving as the need arises.

These materials and the skills gained with the use of these resources will go a long way in assisting my students well beyond their middle school years.
