This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
For many students, high school is the easiest and best time of their lives. However, that is not always true for my students. For many, they are met with difficult challenges that prevent them from succeeding. Some students deal with lack of parental involvement, interrupted education, dangerous neighborhoods, gang violence, drug abuse, and teen pregnancy to name a few. Many of them bring a feeling of defeat and hopelessness.
In order to prepare for the upcoming state exams that are required for graduation, my students will be learning how to develop two well structured essays.
Essay writing is usually a daunting task for many students. However, I achieve the most success for teaching essay writing when I allow my students to be colorful and creative. In my teaching experience, I have seen that simple things like a colored pen or colored paper are huge motivational tools that increase student engagement and help to produce writing samples that can be used to support the understanding of a topic or writing target. I love to see my students excited to write and develop their ideas. It truly helps to build up their self esteem and confidence in my subject area and in others as well.
