My Students

Our school is a mix of immigrant families and upscale suburban families, covering every level of ability and language. In one class I have new Americans who are struggling with basic language skills and AP-bound scholars.

My students are inquisitive, motivated, and challenge-driven.

They dominate the local school districts in academics, sports, and activities (we're nationally-ranked in orchestra and robotics, for example). The members of my state runner-up Knowledge Bowl team are now at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and Boston University.

My Project

Genre writing is the pre-eminent art form of our time. Fantasy and science fiction novels, screenplays, and comics are overwhelmingly successful with high school-age students. They engage with this material on a visceral and automatic level. I plan to make use of that tendency to get them to write intensely personal stories.

Motivating students to write can be a frustrating chore, but having STAR TREK writer David Gerrold (author of the "The Trouble with Tribbles" episode) teach a master class in creating exciting science fiction/fantasy stories will ease the way considerably.

David will be given representative samples of student work several weeks before his visit. Sharing his insights as to just WHY a particular section does or does not work will aid students in applying those lessons to ALL writing, not only SF/fantasy. As the author of 'Worlds of Wonder', the seminal book on how to write in these genres, David is the undisputed final source.

Please help my students achieve this once-in-a-lifetime experience of working with an acknowledged writing master.
