My Students

I teach in a high poverty high school. My school is very racially and economically diverse. The books that we have do not reflect that diversity. They are from predominantly white authors. With the recent budget cuts, we do not have money for new books.

This year I am teaching a creative writing class.

My students are diverse both racially and with their experiences and reading and writing abilities. Some of them love to read and write and others do not. I am challenged with finding material that is both interesting and inexpensive, but also rigorous and addresses the Common Core Standards.

My Project

In order to do that, I am focusing in on author's purpose and reading literature from different people's perspectives. "The Other Wes Moore" is a nonfiction book about 2 people in the inner-city of Baltimore with the same name who lead very different lives. This is an interesting book that my students will enjoy reading and analyzing. After analyzing the author's perspective, they will write their anti-story. They will write about a fictional person with their same name that has a life that is opposite of their own. This will tap their creativity and enhance their reading and writing skills.
