Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Edmund Burke stated, "Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it." My students have so many questions about current and past events and what better way for them to learn from the past than through the use of art.

I work for a small public charter with an enrollment of about 425.

The majority of my students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and many of these students do not have access to computers and the Internet outside school. Additionally, my school has a large English Language Learner population. With continuing budget cuts, neither our school nor I can afford to purchase these much needed teaching tools. Our school works to not only instill the love of learning, but also introduce our students to higher education beyond high school graduation.

My Project

The subject of World History can be complicated and dry when the only reference is a textbook. The majority of my students, especially the English Language Learners, need extra visual aids in order to reach a higher level of learning. Learning through artistic avenues is an excellent teaching tool and will enable my students to make a visual connection as well as help them link past and present historical events. For example, allowing students the opportunity to creatively express their research and present their findings with poster boards, creating the West and East sides of the Berlin Wall, and travel brochures through the slums of New York during the Industrial Revolution. My students need art supplies such as markers, construction paper, poster boards and art pencils in order to bring history alive.

My students need these art supplies to help bring history alive and more meaningful.

Additionally, my students will become more involved in their own education, allowing them to connect past and current events. Thus, my students will have access to a higher quality education.
