Creative Sensory Path for ALL Learners!

Help me give my students an opportunity to build a sensory path in our hallways utilizing a Cricut and vinyl, adhesive sheets!

My Students

I am a School Counselor in a K-4 Elementary School with 500 students in Norristown, PA. They are amazing innovators, creative thinkers and work endlessly with empathy and compassion to take of self, others and things.

Each student in our building comes to school excited and ready to learn.

They engage in many opportunities in our curriculum, technology such as Spheros and coding, a Makerspace room, a Relaxation room, and a safe environment through our PBIS program. Our staff works hard to provide these programs and innovative ideas to our students at our school.

My Project

All PVF students learn self-regulation on their own and in their own time. As educators, we notice when a child starts losing cognitive functioning during the learning process. We recognize that it can be beneficial to give the student a sensory input break or a brain break. We have a self-regulation room where our students also learn how to do this! There are studies about which movements offer children the necessary proprioceptive and vestibular input so a child can refocus and attend which ultimately increases cognition and retention of new information.

The creation of a Sensory Path in our hallways will provide our students with an opportunity to practice self-regulation, reduce sensory seeking behaviors and increase learning opportunities.

Although this is a great opportunity for students with special needs such as autism and/or sensory processing disorders, this path would benefit ALL 500 of my students on a daily basis. The use of the Cricut and adhesive vinyl will allow us to create the PVF Sensory Path with our students' input in our very own Makerspace room!
