Help me give my students a tangible way to process and express their thoughts through a Self-Love Journal for Girls with colorful pens to allow their confidence and voice to grow as they transition to middle school.
Our school is a 3K – 5th grade public school that is a hidden gem located in East New York, Brooklyn. We serve about 450 students. A large portion of our students come from low-income families.
Our school works with a broad based curriculum that will adapt to the many styles of every student here.
We work on all learning styles and modalities. We offer many programs in our school, but lack the resources to get what the students need.
The families are engaged, encouraged and supported by our entire staff. It makes our school community seem more like family. Families assist tremendously in fostering the learning and social-emotional wellness of the children that come here.
Our teachers are highly qualified and compassionate. Our students, from the age of three, are curious, critical thinkers, who are artistically talented and intrinsically motivated. Whether it’s learning the sounds of letters, understanding how Frida Kahlo became famous, or comparing/contrasting characters in a book, the children fully commit. The way they yearn to learn each day makes it worthwhile coming to school each morning.
My Project
Journaling has so many benefits. It allows one to find inspiration, gain self confidence and achieve their goals (while tracking their progress). These journals will help my GEMs (Girls Empowering Movement Squad) do just that. Children face the challenges of peer acceptance and self-identity. My Fifth grade GEMs are transitioning into Middle School and are filled with self-exploration, finding self-acceptance, and having self-love. As their mentor, I am working with them to achieve the seven CORE values: Confidence, Strength, Respect, Honesty, Beauty, Individuality and Voice. My weekly meetings and daily check-ins assist in this goal, however a visual and tangible tool would support us greatly.
Having a positive sense of self and a healthy academic, mental and social-emotional mindset allows students to be the best they can be.
The journals and pens will be an engaging way for students to begin grounding themselves emotionally. The journal gives writing prompts that challenge students to dig deep in their feelings while giving them the space to write their thoughts down. I am dedicated to nurturing the students I work with not only academically but emotionally as well.
