My students attend an inner-city school whose student body is diverse, both academically and socioeconomically. My classes have high percentages of both English Language Learners and Special Education students.
As technology becomes more and more prevalent in education, the achievement gap will increase for those who lack access.
For many of my students, science poses difficulty because of their ongoing language acquisition. For many more, language is not the issue; they struggle instead with reading deficits, processing issues and lack of recall. Technology has programs that will help to reduce the existing deficits.
My Project
We, as teachers, need to be ready to instruct students both at home and in school at the same time these days. The ability to buy digital resources created by other teachers allows for us not to have to "reinvent the wheel" and gives us more time to be available to give feedback to students and grade assignments and assessments effectively. The website, Teachers Pay Teachers, has amazing and creative resources and the money used to pay for them goes right back to the teacher who took time and imagination to come up with engaging resources. By posting digital assignments on Google classroom, students at home and in school have access to the curriculum. The goal of having this project funded is to keep students engaged in science with a variety of resources even if they are at home and not in front of a teacher.
