Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach students in grades 6, 7, and 8 in mathematics. Many of my students deal with challenges of being part of a low income-household, and are unable to access tools that they need to help them succeed. Another challenge that they face is a language barrier: most of them come from non-English speaking households.

Even with these challenges, my students are enthusiastic, determined, and excited to learn!

They come into my classroom everyday, prepared, and ready to get to work. They are inquisitive and want to know the whys behind every calculation and the purposes of them. They love to be able to apply concepts were learning to real world scenarios. They are excited when something finally clicks!

My ELL students are working towards developing fluency within the English language and grow each and every day learning new math vocabulary words. They even love being able to decipher new words in our math story books and creating their own math problems!

They are fearless when it comes to technology and as children of the 21st century, they need to be prepared to use a variety of tools to engage their world.

My Project

Our usually class period starts by students going to their groups for station rotation. Each station is supplied with math related materials to help students engage with the standards.

We have four different stations we go through every day.

Beginning with technology where students use sites such as Khan Academy, Math Games, Prodigy and more to develop skills that they need in order to build a great foundational understanding.

The second station is collaboration, where students engage with each other playing different math games including integer mazes, square and cube roots bingo, fraction scrabble, and much more. This stations focus is to work together and help one another develop math skills around what we are learning.

Next we have independent practice, where students try the problem sets on their own, and if they have any questions they know they can ask a peer for help explaining the problem and build skills to know when to ask for help.

Finally, we have the teacher station. Right now we are using regular desks in the shape of a circle, where I must walk around to each desk in order to help any of my students with practice problems. This is where YOUR help comes in. My students have been begging for a table that allows them to sit closer to me in order to help and communicate with them all at once. By receiving this horseshoe whiteboard table, students will be able to show their thinking and enable us to work together. The easel is great to help display any problems I want them to try, working through a tough problem together and even having a student become the teacher to show the group their thinking. We just need your help!
