My Students

I have seven students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day; independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered; group time to work on academic skills and writing; story time to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.

My Project

My students love to play with a variety of dolls. They love baby dolls and enjoy feeding and changing them. They also like to play with our dollhouse and engage in pretend play with the dolls. Some of my students have difficulty with the concept of pretend play and dolls are a great way to teach those skills.

We utilize our social skills time in the classroom to not only work on sharing and taking turns but also to learn how to pretend.

This concept is often difficult for my students with autism to understand. Having a variety of dolls to use with our classroom dollhouse, baby dolls and an outdoor tree play set will help my students work on these pretend play skills.

Giving students options of what to choose allows them to work on a certain skill with an activity of their choice. They will work on pretend play, sharing, taking turns and communicating while engaging in a doll activity they chose.
