Creative Play Makes Creative Minds

My Students

We are the Michigan Wolverines. These wonderful 5 and 6 year old boys and girls know that in 2029 they will begin their journey to go to and through college. Their journey starts in kindergarten as they learn to think critically, explore their world, ask questions, and learn to be kind and caring citizens.

I teach kindergarten at a public charter school on the west side of Chicago where 97% of my students receive free or reduced rate lunch.

My students come to school each and every day ready to learn because they know that their zip code does not determine their destiny.

My Project

Each year, kindergarteners grow leaps and bounds! It is incredible to see how much they learn from the beginning of the year to the end. What is even more incredible to see is how each student does not just grow academically - they grow creatively, emotionally, and socially.

My school values the importance of supporting the development of the whole child.

We give our students time to explore through creative play. This time gives them opportunities to use language and think about roles in their community. We also use these opportunities to not only connect play to the curriculum and therefore deepen their thinking, but also to give students a space to explore the real-life obstacles that they face in their communities each and every day.

I am requesting a set of ten dramatic play costumes. These costumes reflect a variety of careers and my students will truly be able to embody a variety of community helpers while using these materials. As high-stakes testing and an emphasis on data continue to grow in importance, the necessity for students to use their imaginations remains vital.
