Creative Play Leads to Creative Minds!

My students need blocks and an area rug to use during leisure time and center time to work on mathematical skills, cooperative play, and leisure skills.

My Students

Throughout the day my students are allowed for schedule break times due to their cognitive, emotional, and social issues. During these break times I like to introduce materials such as Legos, Play Doh, and blocks to allow the child to create, use language, and share with peers.

My students are in a specialized classroom that contains 12 students, a teacher, and two assistants.

The children in my classroom have a variety of special needs such as down syndrome, autism, developmental delays and communication disorders. Half of my students also come from bilingual homes where English is not the first language. Our school is a high poverty area that also has a high percentage of children that have experienced trauma. A lot of times children do not have opportunities to be children and play when at home. School allows them not only to work on academics but to work on play and social skills with others.

My Project

The children will use the blocks and rug in a center or during recess. During the center time an adult will be there to guide the play of the students and to ensure proper use of materials. They will work on language skills and mathematical concepts as well as social skills.

This project will make a difference in my classroom due to a lot of my students not having experiences at home to be able to play on a rug with blocks or other materials.

Given this simple experience to my students can make a world of difference in their development.
