Help me give my students Crayola Model Magic, creature dough builders, and fall foam trees and leaf stickers for creative counting lessons and activities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Transitional Kindergarteners are curious hands-on learners. They need repetition and lots of practice to master foundational skills like counting and number sense. Telling others what the are thinking gives them this important practice. Math can often seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be! Most students are still developing a basic understanding of numbers and how they work. The biggest challenge is that numbers are an abstract concept, but transitional kindergarteners are still concrete thinkers. They need lots of hands-on experiences to help them gain a strong number sense.
Creative math activities will make learning fun and engaging, and it will give the transitional kindergarteners the hands on experiences they need to learn and grow as mathematicians.
Giving students the opportunity to create their own projects that focus on mathematical concepts will help them engage in critical thinking and it will help them build their number sense both conceptually and visually. Students will use the Crayola Model Magic to create creatures and animals, and then they will practice their counting and math skills by adding on the Creative Creatures dough builder accessories. The students will have the task of counting, comparing, and adding up the number of eyes, feet, hats, hands and more on their creatures. Additionally, students will create fall trees in which they will have additional opportunities to add, subtract, count and compare the number of leaves used in their project. These open ended math tasks will give students many opportunities to count, compare, add and subtract.
Math is not always the easiest subject for students to understand, but your kind donation to this project will help make it fun and understandable and it will give the students lots of opportunities to engage in mathematical thinking in a creative manner!
